Save Your Teeth and Your Good Night’s Sleep!
Are you suffering from headaches that are worse in the morning? Does your jaw muscle feel sore and tired all the time? Are you sleeping poorly at night due to discomfort and pain? Any of these symptoms can mean that you’re suffering from temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD. This uncomfortable disorder of your jaw muscles and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can be debilitating! If you’re looking for solutions to help you sleep better at night and wake without pain because of bruxism, Avant Dental can help!
What Is TMD?
Your temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. When that joint is out of alignment or the surrounding muscles aren’t functioning correctly, the result is intense pain and discomfort.
The causes and symptoms of TMD are various, but there are several common reasons why your TMJ can become painful. Many patients have osteoarthritis in the joint, resulting in the loss of cartilage that usually cushions the jaw. TMD can also be caused by trauma to your jaw or an incorrect bite.

Getting Treated for Your TMD
TMD treatments can range in complication from surgeries to simple oral appliances. At Avant Dental, we offer night guards to help treat the symptoms of TMD, which are successful in a large number of cases!
Night guards are small oral appliances that you wear when sleeping. They help keep your jaw in a neutral position that will relax your muscles and prevent teeth grinding and clenching that can make TMD pain worse. If you want, you can continue to wear your night guard during the day, a good option for patients experiencing a high amount of pain.
If you come to Avant Dental for TMD treatment, we’ll start with a full oral exam. We want to be sure that we rule out any other causes of your pain, such as an abscess, infection, or impacted wisdom tooth. Once we know for sure that there aren’t any other physical symptoms causing your pain, we’ll help set you up with a night guard.
Using an impression of your mouth, our dental lab will build a night guard that is specially designed for your teeth. We’ll have it back within a few weeks, and then you’ll be on your way to better sleep!
If for any reason your night guard doesn’t help resolve your symptoms, we’ll refer you to someone in our network of specialists that can further investigate your TMD.
Don’t wait for your nights to get more restful – we can help you feel better with just one simple oral appliance for TMJ treatment! Call one of our four Winnipeg area locations today, or schedule an appointment using our online form. We look forward to treating you soon!
